Beloved passport-style event to replace annual lakeside festival at limited capacity in 2021

 

LODI, Calif., April 19, 2021 –– Lodi’s highly anticipated 24th annual Wine & Chocolate weekend safely returns Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, 2021! This event is a fantastic way to spring forward into the new normal with a safe and fun opportunity to taste the diverse selection of renowned Lodi wines while sampling decadent chocolate treats at 20 wineries. This year’s celebration will temporarily replace the region’s annual Row x Row Festival at Lodi Lake which it is unable to host in 2021 due to current health and safety guidelines.

 

Unlike the bustling weekends of the past, this year’s Lodi Wine & Chocolate will have a more intimate, relaxed feel due to a reservation-only format. At time of ticket purchase, guests of the event will have the opportunity to create a two-day itinerary by pre-booking up to four, one-hour tasting reservations between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day for a total of eight reservations over the weekend. Thirty-minute windows between reservation times will allow for travel to and from locations as well as ample time to purchase your favorite wines. “We are eager to welcome guests to our region and tasting rooms during Lodi Wine & Chocolate Weekend,” said Stuart Spencer, Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission. “A smaller event footprint and attendance will allow us to provide guests with increased opportunities to safely and intimately connect with our winegrowers and vintners.”

 

This year’s festivities and food delicacies lineup includes live music by The Ryan Hernandez Band at Oak Farm Vineyards, The Primitivo Trio (Saturday) and Paul Blakemore’s Good Time Rock & Roll Roadshow (Sunday) at GoodMills Family Winery, grilled tri-tip with port wine reduction sauce at Estate Crush, cherry port chocolate ice cream at Heritage Oak Winery, grilled chocolate ganache sandwiches at Drava Wines, and more.

 

Two-day tickets to Saturday and Sunday’s Grand Tasting Tours are $65 per person (plus tax and convenience fees) by advance purchase only at lodiwineandchocolate.com and go on sale today, April 19, at noon. In adherence with safety guidelines, less than 1,300 tickets will be available. Sales will close at end of day Friday, May 7, and will not be available on the days of the event. Tickets to the Grand Tasting Tours include a commemorative wine glass, chocolate treat from partner The San Francisco Chocolate Factory, wine tasting, and admission to pre-selected participating wineries. and because the alcohol content is only 6% you will likely need to consume the whole pack for a real buzz. The colorful can shows the usual scantily clad women cavorting on a tropical beach so this is clearly a summer drink.

 The company have also deliberately gone light on the malt which is mass produced and cheap to make. They use Idaho based premium vodka in all the three drinks

which is made out of winter wheat and corn. Also, important to point out that these drinks are gluten free with very low calories and a reduced amount of bubbles. The bright color of the drinks makes them attractive for the beach and swimming pool. Apparently, there is also some tune on every can that you can play, but frankly I am unable to figure that one out, probably something to do with a app.

 The Pomegranate Vanilla is a very light cocktail and the rather unusual combination of these two ingredients provided a nice easy-going drink for this writer with an emphasis on the balance of the drink. The Coconut Pineapple has a lot more kick to it without the heavy taste of a Pina Colada. The Passion Fruit Peach is a medium bodied cocktail with a very tangy fruity flavor with the lovely sweet undertones of peach.

 The company is already planning a new release which will be the Mango Jalapeno which will be exactly the same formula as the existing products on the market that promises to be more of an airy cocktail with a strong burst of mango sweetness. Check them out and enjoy.

SINGLE MALT IRISH WHISKIES FROM DUBLIN LIBERTIES DISTILLERY

Here is an impressive collection of Irish Single Malt Whiskies that came across our desk recently that deserve a big mention in this forever expanding category. The new release in the USA is part of a luxury collection, all small batch with high quality ingredients. The single malt master in charge of the collection is the rather well known Darryl Mcnally. Highlight is the 16-year-old Keeper’s Coin, the 13-year Murder

Lane, the 10-year-old Copper Alley and the 5-year-old blended Oak Devil. The Liberties neighborhood of Dublin has quite a salty reputation of mystery and mayhem, hence the names of the four expressions.

The Oak Devil which retails for an average of $44.99 is a blend of malt and grain whisky with a gold color and an aroma of baked apples, fresh hay and warm brown sugar. This is sweet whisky blended in American oak casks ending up in a flavor of toffee apple, caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon.

I liked the 10-year Copper Alley at $59.99 that is named after the oldest street in Dublin. It was here that minted coins first emerged, and the smooth whisky has the same color of the cons. The aroma of powdered sugar and honey is combined with apple blossom and red fruits. This whisky has been finished in 30-year-old Oloroso sherry casks which gives the liquid a very distinctive deep amber hue.

The 13-year Murder Lane which retails for $89.99 is named after a murdering alley that connects Bow Street and James Street where numerous murders took place four centuries ago. Flavors of almonds, marzipan and vanilla highlight this whisky, and finished in rare Hungarian oak casks. These have been seasoned with Tokaj, which adds flavors of apricot flesh, white peach and a sliver of coconut. In those days under Christchurch Cathedral, crypts were used as illegal drinking dens, and excavations have revealed silver coins and leather bottles containing alcohol.

The 16-year-old Single Malt can be bought at a retail price of $159.99 and If you look a woody feel to your whisky then this is for you. A salted butter mouthfeel is partly due to the final resting place of this dark, auburn delight which is a 250-liter hogshead cask. This gives it a smooth finish that is rounded out by a honey taste.

These whiskies are currently available in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Colorado, Washington, Michigan and Minnesota with more to be added. It Is part of the Quintessential Brands Group who are known for such spirits as Greenall’s Gin from England and The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey.

for Fiat cars and Juventus Football Club. The Hotel Starlino Distillery produces three

varieties, a red Vermouth, Starlino Rose and Starlino Arancione, the latter two being

wine based aperitifs. Vermouth was originally considered only good for medicinal

purposes, but over time it started popping up in the fashionable Turin cafes and

eventually came to age in the Royal Court of Turin. They also produce Maraschino

Cherries which are de-stoned and made from Italian Marasaca Cherries. They are

the garnish of choice for Manhattans or Negronis and make an exciting dessert

when drizzled over ice cream or cheesecake.

The Hotel Starlino Distillery was founded in 1906 and is located in Moncalieri in the

Turin region, and there is an outstanding view of the Monviso Mountain. Obviously

right now tours are out of the question, but when things finally get back to normal you

The Vermouth or Starlino Rosso has a color of dark red and brown amber and has an aroma of

dried fruits such as prunes, dates, raisins, candied cherries, vanilla spice and orange zest.

The production itself is a combination of Piedmonte wines that are finished in

ex-Kentucky Bourbon Barrels for thirty days. The actual grapes used are Wormwood Gentle

and Wormwood Piedmont, Absinthe and assorted herbs including China, Raisins, Vanilla,

Ginger, Bitter Orange and Cloves. All the three drinks are perfect for cocktails and

only have a 17% ABV.

The Starlino Rose uses the same Piedmont grapes but the botanicals differ from the vermouth

In the likes of elderflower, coriander, cloves, dittany, centaury, hyssop, cardo, angelica,

Sandal, ambrette, thyme, orris and sweet orange peel. After being mixed and agitated

with Trebbiano wine the Rose is then rested in stainless steel for six months, with a

final process of chill filtration before going to the bottler.

 

The Starlino Arancione utilizes pink grapefruit peel in place of the orange peel but still has

a bright orange appearance. This is a semi-dry vermouth that is pretty vibrant and is

perfect on the rocks by itself or with prosecco, soda or tonic.

HOLLYWOOD (Spiritsman) 8/19/20—Named after the Gin Act of 1751, 8th generation London distiller, Charles Maxwell of Thames Distillers, based in Clapham, London hit the nail on the head with this glorious creation.

On a Sunday evening, while my sister was visiting me on the Connecticut shore, we decided to dip our toes into this lovely pinkish hued Victorian-style gin. It gleans its pink coloring from the addition of bitters which harmoniously balances the flavors with exquisite results. The tradition of blending gin with bitters was first created by the British Royal Navy to balance out sweet and dry gins and to supposedly help cure sea sickness. Do you buy that crap? Sea sickness? It sounds to me like an excuse for a prescribed mid-day drink from the infirmary.

We decided to serve it over the rocks with only a splash of soda and a healthy squeeze of lime, keeping it simple and potent as we were ready to effectuate a serious buzz. Admittedly, we were both extremely impressed. There’s just something about gin on a steamy summer evening and this beautiful concoction was going down the hatch with unimpeded glory. It was in relatively short order that ice was clinking in preparation for seconds.

The Bloomsbury Club who is responsible for the four different gin selections available from Gin Lane 1751 are a group of gin lovers and drink industry professionals. Its name signifies an important historical landmark on the gin timeline which was in part brought about by artist William Hogarth’s iconic depiction of Gin Lane. The act banned the sale of gin in prisons, workhouses and shops selling everyday staples. Distillers were unable to sell gin directly to consumers and publicans were no longer allowed to issue credit to their thirsty, loyal customers. Come on now! A bar tab was a man’s right back in the day—really? Fuckin’ bastards! These are the things from which a revolution is born.

Back at the beach, we were rounding the bend of our third serving. We were significantly enjoying the results and my cheeks had developed a similar rosy-hue to the libation that was tantalizing my palate. Similar to the type of rosiness you might see in a colorized black and white portrait of that era. The speed of imbibing was escalating and it was not long before we were reminiscing about the past and waxing sentimental.

The Gin Act of 1751 made this spirit less readily available and more expensive, and with quality improving significantly; by Victorian times it had become “a drink of respectability.” But I am guessing that descriptive depended on just how wasted these Victorian elites hit the bottle, as alcohol does not discriminate. Considering the speed at which we were approaching inebriation, it is that not hard to imagine the bell-shaped skirts of that time becoming inverted and corsets hanging from the chandeliers.

Our spirits were certainly elevated and the expletives started to fly as round four brought it home with the sweet tears of beautiful memories and loved ones no longer able to share with us. We were seriously shit-faced and as my sister is a mere 115 pounds, she was most certainly engaging with her higher power as we were impressively powering through what had seemingly become an unplanned, albeit serious mission.This is a spirit imbued with a lot of history and one that is well balanced—well at least well-balanced enough to keep me on my feet and mixing cocktails as we managed to polish off the entire bottle that evening.

Although a great gin, to give it that extra layer of marketing bullshit, each bottle has been individually numbered and the gins are ‘handcrafted in small traditional pot stills.’ Victoria Pink Gin features eight natural botanicals—juniper, orris root, Seville oranges, angelica, Sicilian lemon, star anise, cassia bark and coriander—and most certainly creates a deeply complex gin. It was this joyous exploration of depth and complexity that turned our toe-dipping intentions into a truly deep dive and ultimately challenged the supposed respectability developed during the Victorian times.

This style gin may indeed have helped to cure sea sickness, but it didn’t prevent my sister from being on her knees hugging the porcelain and talking to the seals. Not the least bit deterred, I realized that viewing the ocean from my Connecticut home necessitated a sea sickness preventative of my own. So the very next day, I justified purchasing another bottle of this excellent gin.

INTRODUCTION TO GRAND BRULOT-A CLASSIC BLEND OF COGNAC AND ECUADORIAN COFFEE

HOLLYWOOD (Spritisman)What exactly is GRAND BRULOT I said to myself as I opened the bottle for the first time just around the time this lockdown took effect. Well Grand Brulot is listed as a VSOP Cognac Café and it can be used in Bloody Mary’s, Manhattans, Negronis, Martinis, spritzes and sidecars Just for starters. It is a blend of Ugni Blanc & Colombard that is crafted Into the 80 proof VSOP. Then 100% Robusta Ecuadorian coffee bean Essence is extracted and blended with brandy to meld for a few months and then it is blended with the VSOP Cognac. There is also a whiff of peppermint, nutmeg and hot cocoa in the drink. Retail price for the drink is $42.99.

The idea for the drink was instigated in 2015 by John Bernbach who asked for the help of industry veteran Francisco Tonarely to investigate the potential of a cognac/brandy drink blended with coffee. Three year later in August 2018 Grand Brulot was launched. This cognac comes from the Tardy Cognac Group and the grapes come from its single estate. Grand Brulot also plays homage to a New Orleans specialty of the same name that is still served around town. The name Grand Brulot was inspired by the famous French pirate Jean Lafite who helped New Orleans repel the British invaders in 1812. He would order coffee, pour cognac in the saucer, set it alight and mix it with the coffee.

THE RISE AND SHINE

2 oz Grand Brulot

Orange Twist

Just pour Grand Brulot over ice and the orange will highlight the flavors

of the spirit.

BRULOT BLACK MANHATTAN

1 oz Grand Brulot

1 oz Bourbon

1 oz Sweet Vermouth

3 dashes Orange Bitters

Bartender Todd Smith created this one. Stir all the ingredients together in a mixing glass. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass with ice and garnish with orange wheel.

FRENCH NEGRONI

1 oz Grand Brulot

1 oz Sweet Vermouth

1 oz Campari

Build in a rocks glass over ice and garnish w/orange wheel.

GRAND BRULOT CAFÉ HOLIDAY

1 oz Grand Brulot

0.5 oz Crème de Cacao

3 oz Porter Beer or Stout

3 dashes of bitters

Throw cocktail ingredients between two cups a couple of times to mix

And ignite the foam from the beer. Pour into a highball glass over ice

And garnish with nutmeg.

Oregon (Spiritsman) 5/17/20/–OREGON’S 503 DISTILLERY ADDS TO LINE OF CRAFT COCKTAILS 503 DISTILLING COMPANY out of Oregon has added Five-O-Tea to its line of canned craft cocktails which now amounts to four. They have also added California, Idaho and Washington to their distribution network and if you live in these states then we strongly advise you to check them out.

The first one we tried was the WICKED MULE, consisting of 503 Vodka, with fresh lime and ginger and infusing it with a homemade ginger syrup and then adding carbonation. This drink of course has to be consumed in the classic copper mug and we particularly enjoyed the strong ginger element in the mix that won a bronze medal at the 2019 American Distilling Institute’s Spirits competition. Each pack contains four cans. and the vodka used in the Wicked Mule is using fresh water from the Cascades region. The vodka incidentally is distilled 10 times.

The BLOOD ORANGE GREYHOUND also consists of the vodka with grapefruit juice peel and grapefruit essence and then it is blended with fresh blood orange puree, grapefruit juice and lime. This drink was the winner of a double gold medal at an awards ceremony we are not overly familiar with, the Sip NW Magazine Best of the Northwest 2019

Awards.

LA VIDA MOCHA takes advantage of the ice-coffee craze with cocktails and combines cold brew coffee from the Riff company out of Bend, Oregon, with Mexican chocolate and cinnamon infused-rum. Just serve it cold over Ice but this is more of a winter drink than for the upcoming summer months.

The new brew on the block is the FIVE-O-TEA and that features 503 Vodka with 30 lbs of loose-leaf tea, freshly squeezed lemons and a tea-infused syrup.

The company also puts out GAMBLER 500 Whisky that is aged for five years in American Oak barrels. It is a blend of rye and corn-mashed whisky that is blended on site down from 125 proof down to a drinkable 80 proof with fresh water from the Cascade range.

This whisky was created by 503 in order to help the clean up of trash and debris in the National Forest lands throughout the country.

The company was founded in 2017 in Oregon City by three industry professionals and they have put a lot of energy into the packaging and we wish them well in California, which can be a make or break scenario for many fledgling liquor brands.

Hollywood (Spiritsman) 5/4/20/–A new tequila came across our desk the other day and Dano’s Tequila is one you will be hearing about a lot in the future. They recently won the Best in Class Anejo at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition, They are interesting because they only use agave and volcanic spring water in their handcrafted tequila, along with an infusion of those two ingredients plus pineapples and jalapenos. No flavoring or coloring is used which is kind of unusual anyway, and the blue weber agave has to be at least eight years old. The pinas are then slow steamed for 26 hours in a hornos oven, milled with a giant grinding wheel and then double distilled in copper stills. Home for the brand is the wonderful sounding Steamboat Springs in Colorado, with the product itself crafted in a family owned distillery in Jalisco that dates back to 1840. All drinks produced at the historic facility are hand crafted in small batches. The distiller is actually the second oldest tequila distillery in the world.

The 2020 event in San Francisco which was held at the Hotel Nikko days before the lockdown took place also gave awards to the three other brands in the portfolio. The Reposado won Gold, and the Blanco and the Pineapple and Jalapeno infusion won Bronze. The Anejo Tequila is strictly for sipping only and with a rich amber color derived from up to eighteen months of aging in virgin white oak barrels.

Tastes of vanilla, caramel, coconut and oak must have entranced the judges The Reposado is aged for nine months and is more light amber in color. The taste of almond and vanilla makes this a drink you can either sip or use in mixed drinks.

The Blanco Tequila is crystal clear and is perfect for mixed drinks while the Pineapple & Jalapeno is made with fresh fruits. and the Blanco. And was the first tequila from the company to garner awards from spirits competitions.

The traditional French process preserves the subtleties of the combination of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes, thereby producing a great tasting and enjoyable drinking experience.

My Personal Taste Test Evaluation of Guillotine Heritage Vodka: The first thing that caught my eye was the rich, amber color that was a delightful departure from the ubiquitous clear vodkas. However, as the saying goes, “The proof is in the pudding.” From the very first sip, there was a burst of a wonderful mix of flavors. I concluded that Heritage Vodka has that wonderful, can’t get enough of flavor that comes from the Champagne region grapes and the oak barrels used to marry the flavors imparted by each of them.

Guillotine Originale: 1? oz
Ginger Beer: 1 ? oz

Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice: ? oz.

Brown Sugar

*Prepare the Glass: Moisten the rim of a chilled champagne glass with lemon, swirl glass into sugar to lightly coat outside rim of glass. Set aside.

Preparation:
In a cocktail shaker, combine Guillotine Originale and lemon juice. Add ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into the *prepared champagne glass.

Top with ginger beer and a hefty splash of Guillotine Heritage. Garnish with curled lemon peel.

I am not aware of the exact history of the sporting events that Captain Morgan Rum has sponsored but their one and only sponsorship deal in 2020 is with the MLS or Major League Soccer to the uninitiated. I saw the extent of that sponsorship at the opening weekend of the new season with the best team in the league, Los Angeles Football Club aka LAFC.

Captain Morgan Rum is part of the massive drinks conglomerate Diageo and judging by the amount of drinking going on before, during and after the game with David Beckham’s Inter Miami team the visitors, it will be a good and profitable fit for Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum.

Incidentally in a hard fought game LAFC were victorious with a 1-0 win courtesy of a clever chip by captain and prolific goal scorer Carlos Vela. This result fitted perfectly with a sweepstake from Captain Morgan that offered free trips to the MLS Allstar game in Los Angeles during the summer. If the captain of either team scored then up to 10 lucky winners would qualify. Vela is the captain of LAFC and he scored the only goal of the match on his birthday.

Captain Morgan is the #1 spiced rum in the USA, and their product line is impressive. In addition to Private Stock, Cannon Blast, Loco Nut and Apple Smash, the brand has Pineapple Rum, Coconut Rum and Grapefruit Rum.

Last year Captain Morgan sponsored four MLS teams and they doubled it to eight this year with top clubs that include DC United, New York and the Seattle Sounders, current holders of the MLS Cup.

From a marketing perspective Captain Morgan have really hit a home run with their involvement in the rapidly expanding world of MLS soccer. Before David Beckham arrived in Los Angeles with the Galaxy, the league was in trouble and close to bankruptcy. Media guests were invited to celebrate the partnership of Prairie Organic Spirits and True Food Kitchen (TFK) with innovative craft cocktails and beautifully styled, sumptuous food offerings.

The sparkling ruby red Causemo caused quite a buzz with comments like “it’s so beautiful”, “I love the tantalizing red color”, and “this drink has just the right amount of sweetness”. The eye-catching drink took just a few minutes for the very adept bartender to prepare using Prairie Organic Vodka, Fresh Lime Juice, Prickly Pear Syrup and Fresh Pineapple Juice (see recipe below). Served next was the light and refreshing Prairie Organic Cucumber Gin with Grapefruit Juice and cucumber slice – perfect for a 2020 spring drink.

Recently, customers at Total Wine gave Prairie Organic Vodka a Five Star rating.

Sumptuous small bites from the TFK kitchen included guacamole dollop on chips and elegantly thin-crust pizza squares followed by a buffet of sliders and a panoply of wonderfully carved vegetables served with several piquant dipping sauces.

Guests’ first few bites of the sliders produced some puzzled expressions. We couldn’t identify the ingredients used for the patties until one taste-savvy gentleman standing next to me said “The patty isn’t meat, it is minced beets!” The beet sliders were as delicious as they were surprising. The minced fresh beets put a welcome twist on the traditional hamburger slider. This meat-free burger was packed with other surprises such as guacamole, a finely sliced/shaved slaw served on a freshly baked bun.

Guest Host and Speaker Gennifer Rose walked us through a mixology course.

At the end of the demonstrations Gennifer had one more “rabbit to pull out of the hat”: a new bar accessory machine that “printed photos/graphics” on top of the foam of the cocktail in the glass. Now that’s a pretty impressive and fun trick.

The Causemo

2.0 oz. Prairie Organic Vodka

.75 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

.75 oz. Prickly Pear Syrup

.75 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe. Enjoy, organically.

VITELLO’S STILL GOING STRONG IN STUDIO CIT SPEAKEASY SERVING CRAFT COCKTAILS IN THE BACK

Studio City (Spiritsman) 2/5/20–Vitello’s in Studio City has been around about fifty five years and is still going strong despite some bumpy moments in its long history. It is basically an Italian restaurant with a very hip separate speakeasy for members and an upstairs intimate theatre that can seat up to 115 guests.

There are sixteen craft cocktails on the drinks menu, and after chatting with the bartender I went for the Rendition Old Fashioned with Basil Hayden Bourbon, black walnut bitters, orange oil, luxardo cherry and rendition mist. My guest being an Aretha Franklin fan, went for Respect, gin, blood orange, peach and lemon all topped with champagne. The wine list is small but very well thought out and all are available by the glass and the bottle. Looking back at the offerings after the event and I noticed they offer House Infused Spirits that you can turn into a craft cocktail of your choice. That would include vodka infused with strawberry, gin infused with blackberry and tequila infused with coffee, vanilla, spices and demerara. These special cocktails are priced at $14 and the regular house craft cocktails are $16.

 

The theater upstairs looks like a really cool venue to see performers in an intimate setting as they perfect their shows for upcoming Broadway appearances. The week night we were there the showroom was dark but they were getting ready for a three night stand featuring the world famous musical impersonators The Edward Twins.

Michael Feinstein also pops in on a regular basis so check the website for upcoming shows which also include comedy and the whole gamut of entertainment. I wish we could have spent more time in the speakeasy which is also known as The Rendition Room. The whole place is done out in Roaring Twenties style, and the room was created in 2016 and of course they feature craft cocktails of any description and small bites to go along with the libations. They also have Prohibit Nights that include wine tastings and food and this classy looking place is a must see next time you are in the area.

ADMIRAL RODNEY RUM FROM SAINT LUCIA-A RUM TO BE RECKONED WITH

HOLLYWOOD (Spiritsman) 10/1/19/–This Rum from Saint Lucia might just be the best new Rum we have tried t5his year and it comes from an island that is not really at the forefront of rum producers. It is smooth, full of flavor but before that we need a history lesson about the British Navy which ruled the oceans for a very long time.

Rodney Bay, which is on the North West of Saint Lucia, is named in honor of the admiral, Sir George Brydges Rodney, who “broke the line” and finished off the French fleet at the Battle of the Saints in 1782. This victory ensured that the British controlled the vital strategic area of the Caribbean. The greedy French under Admiral de Grasse had long sought more influence and control of the sugar islands in the region. When the two fleets met at the battle led by HMS PRINCESSA, (a 70 gun warship captured from the Spanish two years earlier), a sudden change of the wind created gaps in the French line. Rodney, the brilliant tactical genius he was, ordered his ships to do a 90 degree turn and break the French line. By late afternoon the French were defeated and Rodney became a hero at the time. Maybe he has never gotten the kind of accolades Horatio Nelson and others received in the history books, mainly because he was a notorious gambler and a ruthless and unscrupulous collector of the spoils of war.

Admiral Rodney Rum is part of the HMS Princessa line and contains rare and matured rums which are distilled using the 45 plates Coffey still which has been at the facility since 1984. The Admiral Rodney Rums are extracted from the very bottom plates of the Coffey ensuring complexity and Intensity that makes this rum sort of special.

The rums are aged exclusively in American white oak bourbon casks, and are aged anything between five and nine years before being blended by the Master blender. The packaging is very appealing as well even before you open the box, and this is a perfect gift for the rum rum lover in the family or to impress a friend or business associate.

.As for the taste and flavor of the rum, the deep mahogany color liquid smells like raisins along with vanilla and tobacco. The rum is also very sweet with a further touch of caramel and tropical spice to go with the crème brulee and brown sugar tones. Excellent just drinking neat over ice, or for your favorite cocktail..

2019: Another Superb Champagne Harvest

EPERNAY, France (Spiritsman) 9/28/19/–  – Champagne has experienced the effects of global warming, with an increase in average temperature of 1.1°C across the past 30 years. This has so far proved an advantage for our wines, and the winegrowing year 2019 is no exception. Periods of frost in spring did destroy a proportion of buds, but the main factor was heatwave, especially in June and July, which caused scalding that burned up more than 10% of the potential harvest. This was a year when Champagne experienced its highest temperatures on record, with 42.9°C recorded on 25 July.

With hot and sunny conditions in August and September, combined with cool nights on the run-up to the harvest, the vine displayed an exceptional ripening dynamic, producing musts with a good balance of acidity and sugar plus an aromatic concentration that promises well for the future cuvees.

The network that monitors maturation helped winegrowers to time their picking so they only harvested grapes at peak ripeness.

The picking started in the very first days of September and is now close to completion. Despite considerable variations from sector to sector, volumes should exceed 10,000 kg/ha on average, which is close to the economic yield required to satisfy market demand.

The exceptional harvest of 2018 had in any case replenished the “Champagne reserve” (which serves as insurance if climate conditions produce an eventual harvest shortfall). So winegrowers and houses were relaxed about the outcome of this harvest.

Since the 2000s, Champagne has pursued a policy of sustainable development, and has widely reduced its environmental impact in that time. Two major objectives are now established: zero herbicides by 2025 and all areas of production environmentally certified by 2030. Winegrowers and houses are meanwhile preparing for the future with a “tool box” that helps them adapt winegrowing to global warming.

CRUSTACEAN IN BEVERLY HILLS ANNOUNCES THE RED HOUR EVERY WEDNESDAY

Beverly Hills (Spiritsman) 9/24/19/–The beloved Beverly Hills restaurant CRUSTACEAN has just launched the Red Hour every Wednesday from 4-7 pm taking place in the lounge and bar area. The restaurant moved To its new location in March 2018 and the celebrities and good food lovers have never stopped coming to this upscale Vietnamese Eaterie for the last twenty years. There isalso some very exciting news about the upstairs section which will be opening up as DA LAT ROSE on or about November 8th as an upscale dining experience lastingabout two hours with a nine course tasting menu priced at $225. In addition, Crustacean is the first ever recipient of a prestigious award from the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center titled Pioneer Award in Culinary Arts. The star chefs at Crustacean are of course Helene An and Tony Nguyen and the accolades along with achievements and reputation are known worldwide.

However getting back to the Red Hour we got the chance to taste all of the appetizers being served where prices range between $12-14 a plate which is about 25% below the regular price. Of course you are also paying for the exciting atmosphere and buzz at the restaurant along with live music and of course the outstanding service. There are about ten light bites/appetizers on the Red Hour menu and after trying all of them (albeit small portions) there are two or three of them that warrant outstanding reviews. Let’s start with the Impossible Crispy Vegan Roll which is adorned with cranberries and Haricot Vert. Equally impressive were the Chicken & Sweet Potato Dumplings with Madras Pumpkin Seeds so exquisitely prepared by the chefs in the kitchen. Also let’s not forget about the Shitake Mushroom Sashimi in a Truffle Ponzu. One nice touch for the food was the addition of the Tuna Cigars that are a regular menu item and are served in a cigar box. The special cocktails that have been prepared for the Red Hour by chief bartender Yanni Pediaditis range from delightfully pleasant to absolutely spiteful in nature. Gin lovers will want to try the Emperor’s Favorite which features Empress Gin which is a gin with Indian heritage that is quickly making a name for itself in the ever evolving cocktail world. In this one the mixologist has cleverly added Blueberry Lavender, Lemon Juice, Cream Yvette and Egg White.

Tequila lovers will want to go for the Komodo’s Veil that is complemented with Chareau Aloe Liquor, Cucumber, Lime and Thai Chili infused lemongrass. Rodeo Sunset features Remy 1738 with Amaro Montenegro. Lemon and Strawberry For a drink that you can just sip and watch the beautiful people of Beverly Hills do their thing. However star of the show is certainly the BAD ASS which loves up to its name. Very potent libation featuring 10 year Whispering Pig Rye spiced up with Punt eMes and Campari.
