English Whiskey earns historic win for first time ever in major spirits competition with ‘Best in Show’ Whiskey Award.
Heaven Hill Brands win Best Distiller.
A panel of 27 tasters chose the top spirits selects
for 2021 from more than 600 entries
Fred Minnick, a world-renowned bourbon and spirits critic, best-selling author, podcast host and entrepreneur, launched his first international spirits competition called The ASCOT Awards this year. After two months of blind tasting more than 600 spirits samples with a team of 27 spirits industry professionals, he announced the 2021 winners today in honor of National Bourbon Day. See the full list here: ascotawards.com.
Cotswolds Founder’s Choice became the first English whiskey to win “Best in Show Whiskey” at a major spirits competition, while Heaven Hill Brands earned best large distiller with major wins, including Best Value in Christian Brothers Brandy VS, in multiple categories. Other notable wins: Stagg Jr. earns Bourbon Bourbon; Redbreast Irish Whiskey lands the only Category Sweep; Texas-based Garrison Brothers Distillery wins Craft Distillery of the Year; and Barrell Craft Spirits receives Blender of the Year.
“We executed this competition in the middle of a Pandemic, and while it had its challenges, our judges and staff executed this flawlessly,” says Minnick. “I am so proud of what we’ve done here, and I can’t wait for next year.”
Minnick and his team set out to honor the best of the best products in the spirits world, recognizing the top 15% as Double Platinum, the next 15% as Platinum and the next 25% as Gold. The top tier of the categories then faced off in a playoff style to determine their Best in Class.
The ASCOT Awards received entries from highly allocated bourbons and all of the major distilleries across the globe. Completed entirely virtually, each judge of the American Spirits Council of Tasters was carefully selected based on expertise in diverse categories of the spirits world — whiskey, gin, tequila and more. Each was given as much time as needed to fully evaluate the sample to prevent palate fatigue. The awards offer distilleries recognition for their hard work and top-notch products from internationally recognized Minnick.  Watch the final round of the ASCOT Awards, here: youtu.be/WHF2leHcXPg
“This is the first time an English whiskey won a major spirits competition,” says Minnick. “Usually, Scotch, Japanese, Irish or bourbon whiskey win, with an occasional Canadian victor. What Cotswolds did is absolutely unprecedented. The best part is that you can buy this for less than $100 in the United States and 70 pounds in the UK.”

Amidst a booming tequila market and an impressive selection of bottles on shelves, a new tequila launches in time for patios and parties post-COVID. And as part of the brand, a mysterious, fun-loving bandido is delivering the damned finest tequila to aficionados everywhere. El Bandido Yankee Tequila Company launches with its first two expressions, a Blanco and a Reposado.

The company, founded by packaging mogul and former NFL player James Robert Morris and restaurateur and NHL Hall of Fame Hockey Player Chris Chelios, was launched after years of discussions around developing a spirit true to their values – boldly pursuing excellence without apologies and with the utmost integrity.

El Bandido Yankee Tequila is an authentically pure, 100% additive-free, criminally smooth and outrageously delicious, well-priced, ultra-premium tequila.

One sip of El Bandido Yankee Tequila sets your maverick spirit free to live large and create adventurous, fun, and memorable moments with friends, knowing your support is making a difference.

Key differentiators include:

  • Handcrafted under the direction of Master Distiller Karina Rojo at El Viejito Distillery in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco.
  • Crafted from 100% blue weber agave, oxygenated for smoothness and confirmed additive-free tequila as established by Tequila Matchmaker’s Confirmed Additive-Free program.
  • A fantastic-tasting, smooth (no burn) tequila at an accessible price point. No corners were cut in the distillation process.
  • Created with sustainable practices and using fully mature agave.
  • El Bandido Yankee partnered with El Viejito because of their dedication to process, people and the land.
  • Branding and label reflect its deep ties to the renowned Jalisco region, along with its playful depiction of a mysterious bandido who’s always ready to chase down fun and raise a glass in celebration.
  • Founders and a company dedicated to long-term, impactful relationships that honor the people and land of the Jalisco region. A portion of net proceeds from the sale of its tequila, as well as 100% of net proceeds from the sale of its merchandise, go to those efforts.
  • A partnership with S.A.C.R.E.D, a not-for-profit focused on improving the lives of people in rural Mexican communities where agave spirits are made, to identify and support vital community needs.

Consumer-friendly pricing affords the opportunity to enjoy El Bandido Yankee, with each 750 ml bottle at $39.99 for Blanco and $44.99 for Reposado. To find El Bandido Yankee tequila or learn more, visit www.elbandidoyankee.com.

CREATED BY ITS ORIGINAL WINEMAKERS IN 1889 – THE ZIMMERMAN FAMILY TO BE OFFERED AT AUCTION

June 2021. Two bottles of incredibly rare 1889 Tokaji Essencia, Zimmerman Lipot from Hungary’s most renowned wine region Tokaj and from the most famous family to produce it, will be offered in Dreweatts Fine and Rare Wine and Spirits sale on July 8, 2021. The Tokaji Blend is a term used to describe the varietal composition of the revered wines of Tokaj, Hungary and the area and vineyard, which have an impassioned history, centred around the first winemakers of the region, the Jewish Zimmerman family.

The Zimmermann family were wealthy Jewish landowners, creating the region’s legendary sweet wine from first-growth vineyards from the 19th century until World War II. They had numerous vineyards across Tokaj and approximately 60 cellars and lived in an elegant townhouse in Mád, as well as having a second residence in Abaújszántó. Highly successful, their wines were prized, receiving several gold medals at competitions in Berlin in 1892 and Paris in 1896. The company continued to flourish with offices in Budapest, Berlin, Katowice, London and New York, until the occupation of Hungary by Germany in 1944. It was then under General Dome Sztojay and SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann that 437,402 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz, amongst them the Zimmerman family, in an attempt to eradicate the last intact Jewish community in occupied Europe. The vineyards were left to fall into disrepair and eventually taken over by the communist state when Hungary fell to the Red Army in 1945 and communism ruled until the 1980s.

It was in 1990 following the fall of communism, that the first foreign investor in the region purchased the land and vineyards. British wine writer Hugh Johnson acquired it from more than 60 individuals, who had bought it when it was privatized some years before. In doing so, he founded the winery known as Royal Tokaji, which has established itself as one of Hungary’s most foremost wineries. The region of Tokaj was also designated a world heritage site in 2002.

In June 2016, six descendants of the Zimmerman family’s holocaust survivors unveiled two plaques at the front of the headquarters of the Royal Tokaji wineries in Hungary, recognizing the family’s unequivocal link to the history of winemaking in the region and in tribute to the Jewish community there that lost their lives.

The first plaque reads: This was the home of Miklos and Blanka Zimmermann and their two children and the second notes the former home of Lajos and Margit Zimmerman. The signs also go on to note the Zimmerman family’s long history of involvement in: the cultivation, production and marketing of Tokaji wines, since the early 1800s.

The two bottles of 1889 Tokaji Essencia, Zimmerman Lipot being offered for sale at Dreweatts are therefore exceptionally rare and are almost a slice of history. Mark Roberston, Head of the Wine department at Dreweatts says, “One can almost distil the political history of Europe in the 19th and 20th century through Tokaji” and regarding the wine itself he comments; “The free run juice of the aszu grapes can take 6 or 7 years to ferment fully to a maximum 3-7%. This supernatural concentration of sweetness is beautifully married with an unusual level of acidity creating a wine that can age effortlessly across the centuries. Traditionally served on a crystal spoon, what an experience awaits”.

Michael Broadbent, MW describes it as follows, “Several consistent notes. Most memorably, on my first visit to Budapest in 1972, with Josef Dömöter, Head of the Hungarian Wine Trust and Fred May, the UK Monimpex importer. Neither had ever tasted an old Eszencia before. I opened it in Herr Dömöter’s office, to great wonder and satisfaction, and took the remaining half the following morning to Tokaj, where, in Tarcal, I had lunch with the technical Head of the Research Institute for Viticulture. He didn’t like it! Briefly: a deep, warm amber; glorious fragrance, rich, chocolatey, spicy; sweet of course, plump, concentrated taste of singed sultanas, excellent acidity. Last tasted in Leiden Nov 1982 *****”

Mark Robertson concludes, “These are important bottles and I hope they are enjoyed with a chink of the glass to the man and his family who made them”. They carry an estimate of £500-£1,000 per 500 ml bottle and will be sold in two separate lots.

When a large attractive package showed up in Beverly Hills we were Immediately intrigued. The high rating of 98 given by Tasting Panel magazine also got us excited, as did the list of prestigious awards given to the brand at the highly rated San Francisco Spirits Competition. Neft is a rye-based vodka with the all-important water used in the process coming from the Austrian Alps with minimum distillation procedures. Now the company which is based in El Segundo, California, has been recently taken over before the pandemic, and they have been very active supporting the struggling bartending industry in charitable ventures.

The packaging is also interesting enough to set Neft apart from the competition with a portable barrel that is unbreakable, heat resistant and portable enough to carry around. On top of that the barrel comes in three colors, black, blue and white. Getting back to the all-important water used in the vodka, it actually comes from the Rhaetian Alps on the Austrian/Swiss border, water that is so clean and pure that it is naturally low in salts and ions.

Distilled three times in Austria, Neft uses tin and aluminum barrels which are lighter than glass and much easier to transport. The four grains used are from Lower Saxony, Amato, Askari, Pollino and Rasant and they are used with a triple, copper pot distillation process. This is a very smooth vodka that many experts have advised to try neat where you can expect to taste the flavors of cashew and lime chiffon. Throw in orange peel and chocolate almond for a finish and you have a very pleasant after-taste. The sweet vanilla, cream and caramel entry leaves a very smooth taste in the mouth, making it also perfect for cocktails. Here are a couple of the choice recipes that have been carefully selected By the Neft team after fairly extensive research.

NEFT Spicy Lemon Drop

1.75 oz Neft Vodka 0.75 oz Lemon Juice 0.25 oz Simple Syrup 0.25 oz Orange Liqueur 1 dash Angostura bitters Shake all ingredients in mixing tin w/ice. Strain into a Tagin & sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with a citrus wheel.

NEFT Honey Bear

2 oz NEFT Vodka 1 oz Lemon Juice 0.5 oz Honey Syrup 5 raspberries 1 splash of Prosecco Muddle raspberries and add all ingredients into mixing tin w/ice. Shake vigorously and pour into glass. Top w/prosecco and garnish with a lemon Slice and mint.

This year’s celebration will temporarily replace the region’s annual Row x Row Festival at Lodi Lake which it is unable to host in 2021 due to current health and safety guidelines.

Unlike the bustling weekends of the past, this year’s Lodi Wine & Chocolate will have a more intimate, relaxed feel due to a reservation-only format. At time of ticket purchase, guests of the event will have the opportunity to create a two-day itinerary by pre-booking up to four, one-hour tasting reservations between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day for a total of eight reservations over the weekend. Other key changes to this year’s event may be found at lodiwineandchocolate.com/faqs.

“We are eager to welcome guests to our region and tasting rooms during Lodi Wine & Chocolate Weekend,” said Stuart Spencer, Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission. “A smaller event footprint and attendance will allow us to provide guests with increased opportunities to safely and intimately connect with our winegrowers and vintners.”

This year’s festivities and food delicacies lineup includes live music by The Ryan Hernandez Band at Oak Farm Vineyards, The Primitivo Trio (Saturday) and Paul Blakemore’s Good Time Rock & Roll Roadshow (Sunday) at GoodMills Family Winery, grilled tri-tip with port wine reduction sauce at Estate Crush, cherry port chocolate ice cream at Heritage Oak Winery, grilled chocolate ganache sandwiches at Drava Wines, and more.

Passionate about chocolate and determined to deliver a product produced from the finest cocoa beans sourced worldwide, The San Francisco Chocolate Factory (TSFCF) was founded in 1999 as a family business, by Michael Litton who, today, serves as the company’s CEO. Since then, while the company has grown, it has not lost sight of its mission: A passion for and desire to provide quality chocolate for all and love and support of the local community.

Introduced in 2001, the Wine Lover’s Collection by TSFCF featured discs of gourmet dark chocolate in six varying percentages, all wrapped in sleek tins. The trend-setting collection was one of the first on the market to specifically pair wine and chocolate in such a distinct fashion. Still considered as the best on the market, today’s collection has grown to include milk and white chocolate offerings – each accompanied by a suggested wine pairing. Each pairing is taste-tested and endorsed by an in-house sommelier. The San Francisco Chocolate Factory also offers a robust, custom tin program – perfect for corporate and promotional clients as well as weddings and retailers.

HOLLYWOOD (SPIRITSMAN) 2/19/21/–These are canned cocktails that have recently hit the crowded seltzer market and Currently there are three flavors to choose from. All these drinks come in four-packs

and because the alcohol content is only 6% you will likely need to consume the whole pack for a real buzz. The colorful can shows the usual scantily clad women cavorting on a tropical beach so this is clearly a summer drink.

The company have also deliberately gone light on the malt which is mass produced and cheap to make. They use Idaho based premium vodka in all the three drinks

which is made out of winter wheat and corn. Also, important to point out that these drinks are gluten free with very low calories and a reduced amount of bubbles. The bright color of the drinks makes them attractive for the beach and swimming pool. Apparently, there is also some tune on every can that you can play, but frankly I am unable to figure that one out, probably something to do with a app.

The Pomegranate Vanilla is a very light cocktail and the rather unusual combination of these two ingredients provided a nice easy-going drink for this writer with an emphasis on the balance of the drink. The Coconut Pineapple has a lot more kick to it without the heavy taste of a Pina Colada. The Passion Fruit Peach is a medium bodied cocktail with a very tangy fruity flavor with the lovely sweet undertones of peach.

The company is already planning a new release which will be the Mango Jalapeno which will be exactly the same formula as the existing products on the market that promises to be more of an airy cocktail with a strong burst of mango sweetness. Check them out and enjoy.

Vodka Aged in Limousin Oak Cognac and Armagnac Barrels

Guillotine Vodka touts its vodka as being A Cut Above. An interesting double entendre referencing the blade of a guillotine and the claim of something being noticeably superior to others of it’s type, in this case, vodka.

Research of Guillotine Vodka yielded some interesting differences in the ingredients and methods used in the fermentation/distilling of this vodka.

Where as other vodkas are made from pretty predictable ingredients, i.e., potatoes or a number of various grains, both Guillotine Heritage Vodka and Guillotine Vodka Originale are surprisingly made from grapes! And, not just any grapes, only Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes from the Champagne region of France are used.

These grapes are picked and de-seeded by hand, pressed and slowly fermented/distilled. This traditional French process enables the subtleties of the combination of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes to manifest, thereby producing vodka that has an unexpected, subtle flavor not found in vodkas on the market today. In other words, it’s “A Cut Above” the other premium vodkas customers have been accustomed to drinking.

Guillotine Heritage Vodka, Silver Medal Rated 85 Points retails for approximately $80.00, flavors/tastes have been described as caramel, oaky, walnut, toasted sugar, and a hint of mustard. The amber/golden color beautifully enhances the visual appeal of Guillotine Heritage Vodka.

Guillotine Vodka Originale comes in at the lower price point of approximately $55 with taste opinions including: pungent, delicate profile, soft and mild aromas, lovely, surprising fragrance.

Why not do your own taste test by enjoying both of these premium vodkas straight or mix it up a little by using Guillotine Vodka to create your own version of the vodka drink favorites on the restaurant and bar scene.

SINGLE MALT IRISH WHISKIES FROM DUBLIN LIBERTIES DISTILLERY

Here is an impressive collection of Irish Single Malt Whiskies that came across our desk recently that deserve a big mention in this forever expanding category. The new release in the USA is part of a luxury collection, all small batch with high quality ingredients. The single malt master in charge of the collection is the rather well known Darryl Mcnally. Highlight is the 16-year-old Keeper’s Coin, the 13-year Murder

Lane, the 10-year-old Copper Alley and the 5-year-old blended Oak Devil. The Liberties neighborhood of Dublin has quite a salty reputation of mystery and mayhem, hence the names of the four expressions.

The Oak Devil which retails for an average of $44.99 is a blend of malt and grain whisky with a gold color and an aroma of baked apples, fresh hay and warm brown sugar. This is sweet whisky blended in American oak casks ending up in a flavor of toffee apple, caramel, nutmeg and cinnamon.

I liked the 10-year Copper Alley at $59.99 that is named after the oldest street in Dublin. It was here that minted coins first emerged, and the smooth whisky has the same color of the cons. The aroma of powdered sugar and honey is combined with apple blossom and red fruits. This whisky has been finished in 30-year-old Oloroso sherry casks which gives the liquid a very distinctive deep amber hue.

The 13-year Murder Lane which retails for $89.99 is named after a murdering alley that connects Bow Street and James Street where numerous murders took place four centuries ago. Flavors of almonds, marzipan and vanilla highlight this whisky, and finished in rare Hungarian oak casks. These have been seasoned with Tokaj, which adds flavors of apricot flesh, white peach and a sliver of coconut. In those days under Christchurch Cathedral, crypts were used as illegal drinking dens, and excavations have revealed silver coins and leather bottles containing alcohol.

The 16-year-old Single Malt can be bought at a retail price of $159.99 and If you look a woody feel to your whisky then this is for you. A salted butter mouthfeel is partly due to the final resting place of this dark, auburn delight which is a 250-liter hogshead cask. This gives it a smooth finish that is rounded out by a honey taste.

These whiskies are currently available in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Colorado, Washington, Michigan and Minnesota with more to be added. It Is part of the Quintessential Brands Group who are known for such spirits as Greenall’s Gin from England and The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey.

Vermouth (Spiritsman) 12/15/20/–Vermouth was actually invented in Turin, Italy, the Northern Italian town better known

for Fiat cars and Juventus Football Club. The Hotel Starlino Distillery produces three

varieties, a red Vermouth, Starlino Rose and Starlino Arancione, the latter two being

wine based aperitifs. Vermouth was originally considered only good for medicinal

purposes, but over time it started popping up in the fashionable Turin cafes and

eventually came to age in the Royal Court of Turin. They also produce Maraschino

Cherries which are de-stoned and made from Italian Marasaca Cherries. They are

the garnish of choice for Manhattans or Negronis and make an exciting dessert

when drizzled over ice cream or cheesecake.

The Hotel Starlino Distillery was founded in 1906 and is located in Moncalieri in the

Turin region, and there is an outstanding view of the Monviso Mountain. Obviously

right now tours are out of the question, but when things finally get back to normal you

can contact them directly at 39-011-689-1411.

https://www.thestarlino.com/

The Vermouth or Starlino Rosso has a color of dark red and brown amber and has an aroma of

dried fruits such as prunes, dates, raisins, candied cherries, vanilla spice and orange zest.

The production itself is a combination of Piedmonte wines that are finished in

ex-Kentucky Bourbon Barrels for thirty days. The actual grapes used are Wormwood Gentle

and Wormwood Piedmont, Absinthe and assorted herbs including China, Raisins, Vanilla,

Ginger, Bitter Orange and Cloves. All the three drinks are perfect for cocktails and

only have a 17% ABV.

The Starlino Rose uses the same Piedmont grapes but the botanicals differ from the vermouth

In the likes of elderflower, coriander, cloves, dittany, centaury, hyssop, cardo, angelica,

Sandal, ambrette, thyme, orris and sweet orange peel. After being mixed and agitated

with Trebbiano wine the Rose is then rested in stainless steel for six months, with a

final process of chill filtration before going to the bottler.

The Starlino Arancione utilizes pink grapefruit peel in place of the orange peel but still has

a bright orange appearance. This is a semi-dry vermouth that is pretty vibrant and is

perfect on the rocks by itself or with prosecco, soda or tonic.

Gin Lane 1751—Victoria Pink Gin

HOLLYWOOD (Spiritsman) 8/19/20—Named after the Gin Act of 1751, 8th generation London distiller, Charles Maxwell of Thames Distillers, based in Clapham, London hit the nail on the head with this glorious creation.

On a Sunday evening, while my sister was visiting me on the Connecticut shore, we decided to dip our toes into this lovely pinkish hued Victorian-style gin. It gleans its pink coloring from the addition of bitters which harmoniously balances the flavors with exquisite results. The tradition of blending gin with bitters was first created by the British Royal Navy to balance out sweet and dry gins and to supposedly help cure sea sickness. Do you buy that crap? Sea sickness? It sounds to me like an excuse for a prescribed mid-day drink from the infirmary.

We decided to serve it over the rocks with only a splash of soda and a healthy squeeze of lime, keeping it simple and potent as we were ready to effectuate a serious buzz. Admittedly, we were both extremely impressed. There’s just something about gin on a steamy summer evening and this beautiful concoction was going down the hatch with unimpeded glory. It was in relatively short order that ice was clinking in preparation for seconds.

The Bloomsbury Club who is responsible for the four different gin selections available from Gin Lane 1751 are a group of gin lovers and drink industry professionals. Its name signifies an important historical landmark on the gin timeline which was in part brought about by artist William Hogarth’s iconic depiction of Gin Lane. The act banned the sale of gin in prisons, workhouses and shops selling everyday staples. Distillers were unable to sell gin directly to consumers and publicans were no longer allowed to issue credit to their thirsty, loyal customers. Come on now! A bar tab was a man’s right back in the day—really? Fuckin’ bastards! These are the things from which a revolution is born.

Back at the beach, we were rounding the bend of our third serving. We were significantly enjoying the results and my cheeks had developed a similar rosy-hue to the libation that was tantalizing my palate. Similar to the type of rosiness you might see in a colorized black and white portrait of that era. The speed of imbibing was escalating and it was not long before we were reminiscing about the past and waxing sentimental.

The Gin Act of 1751 made this spirit less readily available and more expensive, and with quality improving significantly; by Victorian times it had become “a drink of respectability.” But I am guessing that descriptive depended on just how wasted these Victorian elites hit the bottle, as alcohol does not discriminate. Considering the speed at which we were approaching inebriation, it is that not hard to imagine the bell-shaped skirts of that time becoming inverted and corsets hanging from the chandeliers.

Our spirits were certainly elevated and the expletives started to fly as round four brought it home with the sweet tears of beautiful memories and loved ones no longer able to share with us. We were seriously shit-faced and as my sister is a mere 115 pounds, she was most certainly engaging with her higher power as we were impressively powering through what had seemingly become an unplanned, albeit serious mission. This is a spirit imbued with a lot of history and one that is well balanced—well at least well-balanced enough to keep me on my feet and mixing cocktails as we managed to polish off the entire bottle that evening.

Although a great gin, to give it that extra layer of marketing bullshit, each bottle has been individually numbered and the gins are ‘handcrafted in small traditional pot stills.’ Victoria Pink Gin features eight natural botanicals—juniper, orris root, Seville oranges, angelica, Sicilian lemon, star anise, cassia bark and coriander—and most certainly creates a deeply complex gin. It was this joyous exploration of depth and complexity that turned our toe-dipping intentions into a truly deep dive and ultimately challenged the supposed respectability developed during the Victorian times.

This style gin may indeed have helped to cure sea sickness, but it didn’t prevent my sister from being on her knees hugging the porcelain and talking to the seals. Not the least bit deterred, I realized that viewing the ocean from my Connecticut home necessitated a sea sickness preventative of my own. So the very next day, I justified purchasing another bottle of this excellent gin.

HOLLYWOOD (SPIRITSMAN) 8/5/20/–Perhaps Guillotine Vodka’s most distinguishing attribute is that it is not made from potatoes, corn, nor other grains. Only the finest Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes from the Champagne region of France are picked, de-seeded by hand, pressed and slowly fermented/distilled. This mixture of white and black grapes is the key to Guillotine Vodka’s exceptionally fine flavor.

Today more than ever it seems that new brands of vodka keep popping up in the already highly competitive vodka market. While the other vodka brands have their place in the spirits market, Guillotine excels in flavor and as their bottle proudly proclaims is “A Cut Above the Rest”.

Now let’s talk about flavor because that is where Guillotine Vodka shines. For those of you who tend to shy away from vodka because some vodka’s you may have tried had a medicinal smell or taste, you are in for a pallet-pleasing burst of flavor. From your very first sip of Guillotine Vodka you are greeted with an explosion of fresh, clean, wonderful mix of flavors that come from the perfect blending of black and white grapes from the Champaign region of France. (The French always make exceptional food, wines, and now, vodka.)

Guillotine Heritage Vodka, Silver Medal Rated 85 Points retails for approximately $85.00, flavors/tastes have been described as caramel, oaky, walnut, toasted sugar, and a hint of mustard. The amber/golden color beautifully enhances the visual appeal of Guillotine Heritage Vodka.

Guillotine Vodka Originale comes in at the lower price point of approximately $50 with taste opinions including: pungent, delicate profile, soft and mild aromas, lovely, surprising fragrance. People who have reviewed this vodka suggest that it be allowed to sit for a few minutes to warm a little before drinking.

INTRODUCTION TO GRAND BRULOT-A CLASSIC BLEND OF COGNAC AND ECUADORIAN COFFEE

HOLLYWOOD (Spritisman)What exactly is GRAND BRULOT I said to myself as I opened the bottle for the first time just around the time this lockdown took effect. Well Grand Brulot is listed as a VSOP Cognac Café and it can be used in Bloody Mary’s, Manhattans, Negronis, Martinis, spritzes and sidecars Just for starters. It is a blend of Ugni Blanc & Colombard that is crafted Into the 80 proof VSOP. Then 100% Robusta Ecuadorian coffee bean Essence is extracted and blended with brandy to meld for a few months and then it is blended with the VSOP Cognac. There is also a whiff of peppermint, nutmeg and hot cocoa in the drink. Retail price for the drink is $42.99.

The idea for the drink was instigated in 2015 by John Bernbach who asked for the help of industry veteran Francisco Tonarely to investigate the potential of a cognac/brandy drink blended with coffee. Three year later in August 2018 Grand Brulot was launched. This cognac comes from the Tardy Cognac Group and the grapes come from its single estate. Grand Brulot also plays homage to a New Orleans specialty of the same name that is still served around town. The name Grand Brulot was inspired by the famous French pirate Jean Lafite who helped New Orleans repel the British invaders in 1812. He would order coffee, pour cognac in the saucer, set it alight and mix it with the coffee.

Oregon (Spiritsman) 5/17/20/–OREGON’S 503 DISTILLERY ADDS TO LINE OF CRAFT COCKTAILS 503 DISTILLING COMPANY out of Oregon has added Five-O-Tea to its line of canned craft cocktails which now amounts to four. They have also added California, Idaho and Washington to their distribution network and if you live in these states then we strongly advise you to check them out.

The first one we tried was the WICKED MULE, consisting of 503 Vodka, with fresh lime and ginger and infusing it with a homemade ginger syrup and then adding carbonation. This drink of course has to be consumed in the classic copper mug and we particularly enjoyed the strong ginger element in the mix that won a bronze medal at the 2019 American Distilling Institute’s Spirits competition. Each pack contains four cans. and the vodka used in the Wicked Mule is using fresh water from the Cascades region. The vodka incidentally is distilled 10 times.

The BLOOD ORANGE GREYHOUND also consists of the vodka with grapefruit juice peel and grapefruit essence and then it is blended with fresh blood orange puree, grapefruit juice and lime. This drink was the winner of a double gold medal at an awards ceremony we are not overly familiar with, the Sip NW Magazine Best of the Northwest 2019

Awards.

LA VIDA MOCHA takes advantage of the ice-coffee craze with cocktails and combines cold brew coffee from the Riff company out of Bend, Oregon, with Mexican chocolate and cinnamon infused-rum. Just serve it cold over Ice but this is more of a winter drink than for the upcoming summer months.

The new brew on the block is the FIVE-O-TEA and that features 503 Vodka with 30 lbs of loose-leaf tea, freshly squeezed lemons and a tea-infused syrup.

The company also puts out GAMBLER 500 Whisky that is aged for five years in American Oak barrels. It is a blend of rye and corn-mashed whisky that is blended on site down from 125 proof down to a drinkable 80 proof with fresh water from the Cascade range.

This whisky was created by 503 in order to help the clean up of trash and debris in the National Forest lands throughout the country.

The company was founded in 2017 in Oregon City by three industry professionals and they have put a lot of energy into the packaging and we wish them well in California, which can be a make or break scenario for many fledgling liquor brands.

If you want to visit the distillery when things return to normal they are

located at 275 Beavercreek Road in Oregon City.

Hollywood (Spiritsman) 5/4/20/–A new tequila came across our desk the other day and Dano’s Tequila is one you will be hearing about a lot in the future. They recently won the Best in Class Anejo at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition, They are interesting because they only use agave and volcanic spring water in their handcrafted tequila, along with an infusion of those two ingredients plus pineapples and jalapenos. No flavoring or coloring is used which is kind of unusual anyway, and the blue weber agave has to be at least eight years old. The pinas are then slow steamed for 26 hours in a hornos oven, milled with a giant grinding wheel and then double distilled in copper stills. Home for the brand is the wonderful sounding Steamboat Springs in Colorado, with the product itself crafted in a family owned distillery in Jalisco that dates back to 1840. All drinks produced at the historic facility are hand crafted in small batches. The distiller is actually the second oldest tequila distillery in the world.

The 2020 event in San Francisco which was held at the Hotel Nikko days before the lockdown took place also gave awards to the three other brands in the portfolio. The Reposado won Gold, and the Blanco and the Pineapple and Jalapeno infusion won Bronze. The Anejo Tequila is strictly for sipping only and with a rich amber color derived from up to eighteen months of aging in virgin white oak barrels.

Tastes of vanilla, caramel, coconut and oak must have entranced the judges The Reposado is aged for nine months and is more light amber in color. The taste of almond and vanilla makes this a drink you can either sip or use in mixed drinks.

The Blanco Tequila is crystal clear and is perfect for mixed drinks while the Pineapple & Jalapeno is made with fresh fruits. and the Blanco. And was the first tequila from the company to garner awards from spirits competitions.

Spicy Honey Mezcal Margarita Cocktail with lime and Ice. Beverage Concept.

The brand has only been around a couple of years and is currently available In seven states and can be purchased online at www.reservebar.com. We endorse the brand wholly and even though the tequila market is Becoming increasingly overcrowded this might be a brand that has some staying power. Distribution is out of Miami by Park imports.

Spiritsman (HOLLYWOOD) 4/15/20/–Relatively new to the spirits world Guillotine Vodka made its debut at the 75th Annual Wine and Spirits Wholesalers’ Association Convention in Las Vegas in May 2018. Guillotine Vodka differs from the traditional vodkas that we as Americans have become accustomed to enjoying. Guillotine Vodka is made not from potatoes, corn, nor other grains. It is made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes from the Champagne region of France. These grapes are picked and de-seeded by hand, pressed and slowly fermented/distilled. The traditional French process preserves the subtleties of the combination of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay grapes, thereby producing a great tasting and enjoyable drinking experience.

My Personal Taste Test Evaluation of Guillotine Heritage Vodka: The first thing that caught my eye was the rich, amber color that was a delightful departure from the ubiquitous clear vodkas. However, as the saying goes, “The proof is in the pudding.” From the very first sip, there was a burst of a wonderful mix of flavors. I concluded that Heritage Vodka has that wonderful, can’t get enough of flavor that comes from the Champagne region grapes and the oak barrels used to marry the flavors imparted by each of them.

Guillotine Vodka Originale comes in at the lower price point of approximately $55 with taste opinions including: pungent, delicate profile, soft and mild aromas, lovely, surprising fragrance. People who have reviewed this vodka suggest that it be allowed to sit for a few minutes to warm up before drinking.

Tonight instead of defaulting to the traditional vodka martini, why not kick it up a notch with a bit of je ne sais quoi of your own by preparing the famous French 75.

The French 75

This update to the Parisian classic is a light, refreshing, and sophisticated cocktail that accentuates Guillotine Vodka’s light citrus notes with bubbly ginger beer and a splash of the 90-proof Guillotine Heritage aged vodka for good measure.

Ingredients
Guillotine Originale: 1? oz
Ginger Beer: 1 ? oz

Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice: ? oz.

Guillotine Heritage: 1 ? oz

Brown Sugar

*Prepare the Glass: Moisten the rim of a chilled champagne glass with lemon, swirl glass into sugar to lightly coat outside rim of glass. Set aside.

Preparation:
In a cocktail shaker, combine Guillotine Originale and lemon juice. Add ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into the *prepared champagne glass.

Top with ginger beer and a hefty splash of Guillotine Heritage. Garnish with curled lemon peel.

This sophisticated cocktail will make you feel like “Puttin’ on the Ritz”.

ENJOY!

Iconic Southern California Resort Taps Top Talent from Old Lightning Bar, Peppi’s Cellar, and the NoMad Bar for Special Pop-up Bar Experiences

NewPort Beach (Spiritsman) 3/8/20/–Great things happened when the award-winning, stunningly beautiful 504 acre Newport Beach Resort at Pelican Hill partnered with three of the nation’s most revered bars: Old Lightning Bar, Peppi’s Cellar, and the NoMad Bar, each sharing their treasure trove of talents and skills developed in their pursuit of excellence to provide innovative “night out” experiences.

This successful collaboration culminated in the launch of Aperitivo Hour(s) Pop-ups at the Newport Beach Pelican Hill Coliseum Pool & Grill, Old Lightening Bar in Los Angeles, and Peppi’s Cellar and NoMad Bar, both in New York City as detailed on the schedule below.

Friday, March 6 and Saturday March 7 in Newport Coast:

Guests were presented with Pablo Moix’s tantalizing selection of beautifully crafted cocktails:

Aperol Spritz: Classic Specialty of the Evening

Garabaldi: Campari and Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice

Brown Derby: Wild Turkey 101-Bourbon, Grapefruit, Lime, Honey

Sierra Norte: Montelobos Mezcal, Aperol, Pineapple, Lime

Buenaventura: Bulldog Gin, Cinzano Dry Vermouth, Cacao White

Atomic Old Fashioned: Master’s Keep Cornerstone Rye Whiskey, Bitters, Sugar

Friday, March 6 and Saturday March 7 in Los Angeles:

Old Lightning Bar’s menu features over 90 handcrafted cocktails as well as a collection of over 1,200 rare, vintage or limited-release spirits by owners Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni.

Friday, March 20 and Saturday March 21 in New York City:

NYC’s tony Peppi’s Cellar, famous for pairing its extensive cache of spirits with impressively upscale Italian menu offerings in the ambience of the old-style bars in Rome.

Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 in New York City:

Although the NYC tavern NoMad Bar is known for its classic cocktails, recently Food and Beverage Vice President, Robitschek, Bar Director, Nathan McCarley-O’Neill, and Los Angeles Bar Director, Dave Purcell have designed and crafted festive, large format drinks and a selection of reserve cocktails using rare spirits. No doubt, those fortunate enough to try these “think outside the traditional bottle drinks” will be rewarded for their adventurous efforts.

Many thanks and gratitude are extended to the Resort at Pelican Hill management, staff, media personnel, resident and guest bartenders, complimentary valet parking attendants, food service staff and all others involved in working together to create this fun, high energy, excitement-filled evening in celebration of the Aperitivo Hour(s) Pop-ups.

The Resort at Pelican Hill is a fabulous choice for a special occasion visit, vacation, or business event. You won’t be disappointed. This resort has 128 two, three, and four bedroom villas with magnificent coastal views and an unparalleled array of appointments. Also available are bungalow guest rooms, suites with private terraces, and many other superb accommodations.

Of special interest to golfers is the Pelican Hill Golf Club consisting of 36 dramatic holes with abundant ocean panoramas (designed by Tom Fazio).

Those traveling with children will be bowled over with the children’s retreat consisting of a clubhouse and terrace for ages 4 – 12. Be sure to checkout the themed, half-day and full-day sessions of stimulating activities available for the wonderfully inquisitive young minds.

I am not aware of the exact history of the sporting events that Captain Morgan Rum has sponsored but their one and only sponsorship deal in 2020 is with the MLS or Major League Soccer to the uninitiated. I saw the extent of that sponsorship at the opening weekend of the new season with the best team in the league, Los Angeles Football Club aka LAFC.

Captain Morgan Rum is part of the massive drinks conglomerate Diageo and judging by the amount of drinking going on before, during and after the game with David Beckham’s Inter Miami team the visitors, it will be a good and profitable fit for Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum.

Incidentally in a hard fought game LAFC were victorious with a 1-0 win courtesy of a clever chip by captain and prolific goal scorer Carlos Vela. This result fitted perfectly with a sweepstake from Captain Morgan that offered free trips to the MLS Allstar game in Los Angeles during the summer. If the captain of either team scored then up to 10 lucky winners would qualify. Vela is the captain of LAFC and he scored the only goal of the match on his birthday.

Captain Morgan is the #1 spiced rum in the USA, and their product line is impressive. In addition to Private Stock, Cannon Blast, Loco Nut and Apple Smash, the brand has Pineapple Rum, Coconut Rum and Grapefruit Rum.

Last year Captain Morgan sponsored four MLS teams and they doubled it to eight this year with top clubs that include DC United, New York and the Seattle Sounders, current holders of the MLS Cup.

From a marketing perspective Captain Morgan have really hit a home run with their involvement in the rapidly expanding world of MLS soccer. Before David Beckham arrived in Los Angeles with the Galaxy, the league was in trouble and close to bankruptcy. Now it is the largest league in the world with 26 teams and they will soon be adding four more from Austin, St.Louis, Sacramento and Charlotte. The average price for a franchise is now a whopping $320 million, and that is mainly the legacy of David Beckham. Big European

names are being tempted as we speak to cross the Atlantic, so Captain Morgan’s marketing team have to be given plaudits for being ahead of the pack, certainly where connecting rum with a happening sport.

Prairie Organic Spirits The No. 1 USDA Certified Organic Spirits Brand in the USA @PrairieOrganic

New Port Beach (Spiritsman) 3/4/20—This beautiful Newport Beach evening proved to be the perfect opportunity to launch into Spring 2020 to Make Memories Organically with Prairie Organic Spirits. Through Prairie Organic Spirits’ “SPIRIT OF CHANGE FUND” the #1 Organic Spirit in the USA is dedicating 1% of sales back to fund the next generation of farmers to encourage and support growing organically. Every purchase of Causemo benefits this program in education and scholarships through the Rodale Institute.

Media guests were invited to celebrate the partnership of Prairie Organic Spirits and True Food Kitchen (TFK) with innovative craft cocktails and beautifully styled, sumptuous food offerings.

The sparkling ruby red Causemo caused quite a buzz with comments like “it’s so beautiful”, “I love the tantalizing red color”, and “this drink has just the right amount of sweetness”. The eye-catching drink took just a few minutes for the very adept bartender to prepare using Prairie Organic Vodka, Fresh Lime Juice, Prickly Pear Syrup and Fresh Pineapple Juice (see recipe below). Served next was the light and refreshing Prairie Organic Cucumber Gin with Grapefruit Juice and cucumber slice – perfect for a 2020 spring drink.

Recently, customers at Total Wine gave Prairie Organic Vodka a Five Star rating.

Another accolade is the Gold Medal – San Francisco Spirits Competition. Best Craft Vodka Distillery – USA Today Readers

Sumptuous small bites from the TFK kitchen included guacamole dollop on chips and elegantly thin-crust pizza squares followed by a buffet of sliders and a panoply of wonderfully carved vegetables served with several piquant dipping sauces.

Guests’ first few bites of the sliders produced some puzzled expressions. We couldn’t identify the ingredients used for the patties until one taste-savvy gentleman standing next to me said “The patty isn’t meat, it is minced beets!” The beet sliders were as delicious as they were surprising. The minced fresh beets put a welcome twist on the traditional hamburger slider. This meat-free burger was packed with other surprises such as guacamole, a finely sliced/shaved slaw served on a freshly baked bun.

Guest Host and Speaker Gennifer Rose walked us through a mixology course.

At the end of the demonstrations Gennifer had one more “rabbit to pull out of the hat”: a new bar accessory machine that “printed photos/graphics” on top of the foam of the cocktail in the glass. Now that’s a pretty impressive and fun trick.

Here’s the recipe as promised:

The Causemo

2.0 oz. Prairie Organic Vodka

.75 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

.75 oz. Prickly Pear Syrup

.75 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe. Enjoy, organically.

A special thanks and appreciation goes out to the generously provided code to take Uber rides to and from this fun-filled event. Best wishes to True Food Kitchen and Prairie Organic Spirits on their continued success in bringing the best, freshest foods and beverages to an appreciative public.

Viva Tequila Festival Launches

VIP Tour Of Jalisco

Journey across Mexico’s agave heartland provides VIP access to the birthplace of Tequila

Atlanta, GA  (Spiritsman)–2/23/, 2020 – If sleeping in aristocratic haciendas, savoring unique dishes straight out of Mexican folklore and sipping craft Tequilas in some of the world’s most exclusive spirit-producing regions sounds like an experience not to be missed, then Viva Tequila Festival’s new tour of the Lowlands and Highlands of Jalisco state in Mexico is tailor-made for you.

Juan Bonilla Imports is an Atlanta-based company dedicated to teaching the history and artistry of Tequila. Its anchor activity is the annual Viva Tequila Festival, which highlights the food, drink, and culture of Mexico in a fun, upscale setting. The company is now offering its own exclusive tour across the agave fields of the UNESCO-designated Tequila region as well as other parts of Jalisco, Mexico.

Hosted by wine, beer and spirits purveyor Juan Bonilla, dubbed “Mr. Tequila,” the Viva Tequila Festival Tour takes participants on an exclusive trip down the historic timeline of the Tequila Trail, providing in-depth understanding of the different regions that cultivate Tequila, the history of this iconic Mexican spirit and its importance in the local, national and international economies.

Bonilla’s family has been involved in the production of Tequila for more than a century, and his relationship with small-to-large tequila makers and local businesses in Jalisco ensures a once-in-a-lifetime experience that very few people ever get to enjoy.

The Viva Tequila Festival’s Mexico Experience visits the cities of Tlaquepaque, Tequila, Atotonilco, and Guadalajara to provide a local perspective of the manufacturing of Tequila. Participants will be able to mingle with locals and admire and shop for unique Mexican works of art, both folk and fine, all while sipping limited edition craft Tequilas from distilleries that embody the traditional to modern styles of manufacturing. Highlights include visits to the Fortaleza and Don Nacho craft distilleries as well as hacienda of José Cuervo, where participants bottle their own Reserva de la Familia and enjoy a tasting in the property’s private cellar and then dinner at the Tienda de Raya, both opened exclusively for Viva Tequila Festival.

All Tequila tastings are paired with meals at some of the region’s most iconic restaurants, including Tlaquepaque’s Casa Luna Restaurant, which offers a Tequila as well as regional fruit drinks, and Solar de la Animas Hotel, which serves breakfast-time “wake-you-up” morning drinks.

Tour participants are treated to stays in centuries-old haciendas that were once home to some of Mexico’s wealthiest people. Take a morning horseback ride at the historic, 17th century Hacienda Labor de Rivera or disconnect and relax with a spa treatment at Hacienda El Carmen Hotel & Spa.

Viva Tequila Festival’s tours are booked via the company’s concierge service. For more information on upcoming tours or information, please visit www.vivatequilafestival.com.

VITELLO’S STILL GOING STRONG IN STUDIO CIT SPEAKEASY SERVING CRAFT COCKTAILS IN THE BACK

Studio City (Spiritsman) 2/5/20–Vitello’s in Studio City has been around about fifty five years and is still going strong despite some bumpy moments in its long history. It is basically an Italian restaurant with a very hip separate speakeasy for members and an upstairs intimate theatre that can seat up to 115 guests.

There are sixteen craft cocktails on the drinks menu, and after chatting with the bartender I went for the Rendition Old Fashioned with Basil Hayden Bourbon, black walnut bitters, orange oil, luxardo cherry and rendition mist. My guest being an Aretha Franklin fan, went for Respect, gin, blood orange, peach and lemon all topped with champagne. The wine list is small but very well thought out and all are available by the glass and the bottle. Looking back at the offerings after the event and I noticed they offer House Infused Spirits that you can turn into a craft cocktail of your choice. That would include vodka infused with strawberry, gin infused with blackberry and tequila infused with coffee, vanilla, spices and demerara. These special cocktails are priced at $14 and the regular house craft cocktails are $16.

The theater upstairs looks like a really cool venue to see performers in an intimate setting as they perfect their shows for upcoming Broadway appearances. The week night we were there the showroom was dark but they were getting ready for a three night stand featuring the world famous musical impersonators The Edward Twins.

Michael Feinstein also pops in on a regular basis so check the website for upcoming shows which also include comedy and the whole gamut of entertainment. I wish we could have spent more time in the speakeasy which is also known as The Rendition Room. The whole place is done out in Roaring Twenties style, and the room was created in 2016 and of course they feature craft cocktails of any description and small bites to go along with the libations. They also have Prohibit Nights that include wine tastings and food and this classy looking place is a must see next time you are in the area.
